Recent articles that we have published mark a trend that the DGT are concerned about: an increase in road accidents involving motorcycles.
Just the weekend past, there were two motorcycle accidents resulting in two deaths and one person seriously injured.

In fact, a third of road deaths (45) within the province during 2024 were made up of motorbike riders. Furthermore, just this year so far, four bikers have lost their lives.
For this reason, the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) has asked for an increase in helicopters and drones, especially during weekends, in areas with a high concentration of bike-related road accidents.
The Provincial Head of the DGT, Juan Diego Ramírez, hopes that by this coming weekend, these extra resources will be made available.
But these are not the only measures that will be adopted, because there will also be an increase in Guardia-Civil, traffic police on duty. There will also be more drugs and alcohol road checks, as well.
“The most important thing is to increase awareness,” he explained, concerning drug consumption whilst driving because whereas DUI cases are decreasing, the number of drivers/bikers who are found to have consumed drugs has increased by 30%.
The roads where there have been most biker deaths are the N-340, A-395 nd the A-348.

Reader comments: “Major issues for us for years is the lack of acknowledgement by the Salobreña Ayuntamiento and Conservation that AlfaMar and the farms above us on the N-340 exists. We have experienced accidents and biker deaths. On weekends many scream through at over 120kph. On ordinary day cars race through making exits dangerous. We need Urbanisation speed limits and a roundabout. But…. Nothing…. Why?” – Trevor Mitchell
Reader’s Comment: “I am ex-pro sport and given the article about increased deaths on the roads, ex-TT on Isle of Man. Years ago one of the police said to me that the reason so many more regular bikers are killed these days is to do with the cost of insurance, which goes up as people are killed.
He said in the old days, when yoou could put a bike on your parents insurance, people started with 50cc things and gradually moved up.
Now young people cannot possibly afford the insurance for bigger bikes, so it is older guys who are buying them. And they are used to cars, so think phah, 1000 cc is nothing, like a little run around car. Not realising that there is a massive difference. Like one horse feels massively more powerful than 50 cc. So their road craft is not what it should be.
Bikers have a rep for recklessness, and in A&E we call them organ donors. As at the time they were 1 % of road users, and 29% of fatatlies. But think increased recklessness aka stupidity of drivers has also increased with all the car safety features, as people think nothing can hurt them with all this kit in the car.
Again, another policeman said to me that airbags, side impact bars etc are not the answer.
There should be a massive spike in the centre of the steering wheel. As that would make people drive” – Anonymous
Reader’s comment: “Why anonymous? Your remarks are a bit near the mark but based on many truths. Often as I am driving, both motorcyclists and bicycle riders just ignore the stated rules. Yes I know car drivers do too. But there is a bit more safety in a car if you are lucky. Speed is mostly the key to many issues, until you get caught and banned, then you will cycle like a god.” – Patrick Barry Storey
