One of the several meetings that Chairman Francisco Trujillo of the Asociación de Chiringuitos, is having with mayors has been with the Mayor of Salobreña, Javier Ortega.
Together with the Councillor for Tourism, Carmen Callejón and two members of the association, they discussed improvements to the beaches following the gales, the new-paseo project, previsions for parking spaces, improvements in waste collection (hoppers) and the presence of hawking along the paseo.

One point that pleased Chairman Trujillo was the Mayor’s decision to increase the beach safety and lifeguard coverage on all of Salobreña’s beaches.
The Mayor announced that they had just closed a deal with a company that provides lifeguards so that a service begins in Semana Santa and won’t be withdrawn until the 30th of September, starting next year, not the present year.
However, this year’s coverage won’t begin on the 1st of June, but will continue seven days a week until the 30th of September.
Chairman Trujillo said that he would be pushing for such an arrangement to the mayors of other Costa Tropical, seaside towns.
As for the paseo project’s second and third phase, the Mayor asks beach-area, business owners to come forward with suggestions. Work on these phases must begin soon, owing to the terms that came with the grants: use it or lose it.
As for parking, the Mayor said that they would increase parking areas, but not along the paseo: “We want to increase parking in the second-line of the beach area, specifically along, Avenida de Andalucía,” he explained.
As for hawkers along the paseo, he said that they were working on it, together with an increase in police-officer numbers.

Reader’s comment: “I could understand during the COVID issue for distancing between persons that maybe shouldn’t have been out, but once that was finished., why oh why? Still stop cars parking safely beside the beach road. Especially for elderly and families.
The pavement in place is wide enough for four persons to walk side by side. Except where it is partially blocked by the illegal vendors goods. Rather then just looking. Perhaps the council could encourage the local police could be more proactive. After all are the sellers illegal migrants and are the goods fakes. ??
Back to the point. The road was made into a widened walking area . With blue bollards. They were taken away and bumps installed. The only people I see using that area are cyclists going the wrong way against the flow of traffic. Meanwhile the parking on the shops side is awkward. Reverse parking here in Spain is it seems considered odd. But reversing out into an artificially narrowed road is very dodgy. Open the road up again and put in parking fees for the summer. Euros in the pockets.” – Patrick Barry Storey
