Biker Swept Away

The motorbike belonging to a 61-year-old missing man in Pujerra (Serranía de Ronda, Málaga) has been found in Río Genal; he had been swept away trying to cross it.

The bike was buried under a metre and a half of silt, stones and tree branches more or less where the victim disappeared.

The incident occurred around 12.40h on Wednesday the 19th, which was when the emergency call centre received an alert from eyewitnesses, stating that it had occurred next to the bridge on the Igualeja-Júzcar road.

The missing man, Ignacio Cánovas, had travelled over to the province of Málaga from Cádiz on a biker trip, accompanied by three other bikers and when they reached the river, he decided to try and cross it.

He and his companions belonged to the Moto Club Jerezano. Apparently other bikers had managed to cross it before him without incident.

Editorial comment: people fail to realise the force behind fast moving water, even when it is shallow. Even if it only goes up to your knees, it will knock you off you feet and you won’t get back on them.
