The Scandinavians in the Los Nórdicos association in Almuñecar are in full swing.
Mostly we enjoy the sun and the coast or mountains. If anyone suddenly misses the snow and the cold, they take a hike to Sierra Nevada to ski.

We do encourage our members to register with the Municipality, to empadronarse. We should be part of the statistics, integrate better – and it gives us the right to vote locally! This is what we expect from immigrants or outsiders who join our countries in the north.
Our association has increased. We are now more than 540 members, 80% Swedes, and the rest from Norway, Denmark, Finland or Iceland. Being an association with no religious or political affiliation, we focus on recreational activities together and to seek bonds with the society we live in here in Spain.
The most popular activity is our weekly Wednesday meeting. We spend an hour on any interesting topic, our members suggest, including with representatives from the Ayuntamiento or scholars from the region, who can share insights on the history of our surroundings.
Mingling and drinks help to socialise. We just had a very interesting talk, by our member Rolf Bonstrom, about the history of sugar – and especially the production in our region, from the Arabs to our days. This, of course, included the Ron Montero and Ron Mondero enterprises! Later in March Carmen Fenrandez will talk about “The Spanish Civil War – from Republic to Dictatorship.”
The second, most popular activity is petanca – boule. The paper Ideal got hold of this and wrote a piece about us – El ritmo nórdico de la petanca | Ideal in February. There are many Francophone, international and local petanca players, as well, but the Scandinavians are probably the most frequent players in Almuñécar, several times a week.
On March the 5th there will be a major competition against other Scandinavians – the sister organisation Association Hispano-Nórdico from Nerja on the beach in front of Hotel Helios. And on March 18th another competition from Scandia, Benalmadena. Come join us as fans and share a hot dog while being at it!
We do like to participate in activities in the community. We organise events to collect resources for Madres Solas ‘Marisa Sendón.’ Next time will be on March the 2nd with a vernissage from our painting workshops with waffles and Cava. All income will be donated.
On the February 22nd we joined efforts with the Ayuntamiento and other associations from the coast, organized in Tic-Tac, to collect plastics and other garbage from the riverbeds in Almuñecar. This is mainly a promotional effort – everyone should care about not dumping stuff anywhere…
In March we support activities with Tic-Tac and the Ayuntamiento to highlight the need to manage our precious water resources. The World Water Day is on March the 22nd every year. Spain and our region are indeed affected by either too little or too much water, mainly the former. In 2022 the embalses were at less than a third of there capacities in the Granada province. Emergency protocols were activated to save water.
And then the Dana hit, with floods also nearby and affected families. The rain this season has helped to increase the capacity of Embalses de Rules to almost 50% but Bermejales is still at 27%. We will support promotional activities on how to be more efficient in using water. For example, we have an active golf group. Golf is a major delight for many of the visitors to Andalucia and its 100 golf courses. These swallow immense amount of water, between 20,000 and 30,000 litres a year. Using recycled water, efficient irrigation systems and drought resistant grass requires a lot less water. We can help in making this reality.
