Resistance to Punta Fishing Ban

Almuñécar’s chief opposition party, Convergencia Andaluza (CA) said that it would take the restriction on sports fishing off Punta de La Mona to an upcoming Town Council Meeting.

“Our sports fishing sector feels indignation over the slight against recreational fishing (angling off the rocks or from boats, as well as underwater fishing) when putting in place a total ban on the practice whilst regulating other activities that could also have an environmental impact,” reads the text of the motion.

It goes on to point out that enthusiasts for this recreational activity share the importance of this natural area and the need for it to be protected, which can be achieved without a total prohibition being placed on this activity. This is the case, they point out, where “regulations are in place in the Reserva Marina Cabo de Gata, where recreational fishing is allowed.”

The CA says, “The Junta de Andalucía did not take into account the 3,000 signatures collected amongst fishermen, who are willing to adapt fishing tackle for more sustainable ones, respecting new closed seasons, mesh sizes or any other kind of restriction that the administration considers necessary for the protection of the reefs in the area.”

The signatories to the petition reject the NGO’s studies for being far from impartial.
