The Guardia Civil have arrested two individuals, suspected of being behind 26 break-ins targeting cortijos at the eastern end of the Costa Tropical.

The suspects are believed to have sold their booty via Whatsapp‘ groups.

Police operation Aperos25 closed in and arrested these two men, aged 36 and 48 respectively, thought to have been behind burglaries in Gualchos, Lújar, Rubite, Polopos, Sorvilán andAlbuñol.

The spate of break-ins began last December and continued during the next two months. Obviously, with this number of cortijos (as dwellings) and aperos (farm-tool storage buildings), residents in this area were more than a little concerned about their own properties being next.

In fact, the sort of booty that the burglars went after was, fertilisers, weedkiller, tools, farm machinery and even in one case … outboard motors.

It was the Guardia Civil’s Robos en el Campo (Roca) unit in Motril that took up the investigation, examining targeted properties for clues, which they found.

Fortunately, some properties had security cameras whose images were fundamental, together with tracing the stolen items on Whatsapp groups.

With the evidence accumulated, they obtained warrants from a judge to search the homes of the suspects, where they found an amount of stolen items.

In fact, some of the recovered items were not amongst those reported as stolen from the 26 burglaries, leading the police to suspect that they had carried out more than the 26 being investigated.

They were brought before a police court and released pending trial.
