The Mayor of Órgiva, Raúl Orellana, has written to the provincial representative of the Government of Spain requesting more Guardia Civil officers, owing to growing social insecurity.
He says that not only the residents of Órgiva are worried about safety on the streets as far as crime goes, but also the people of the Alpujarra Granadina in general.

He considers that the number of officers stationed at the Guardia Civil post in town is insufficient because on some weekend there are only two, 2-man patrols available for the whole of the Alpujarra on the Granada side of the Almería border.
“We are working to make a large plot of land available to the Ministerio del Interior for a new Guardia Civil post, so that it can house the number of officers that this comarca needs to tackle the crime level that this area suffers,” he said.
The letter sent to Inmaculada López, who is the Subdelegada del Gobierno, says that Órgiva needs “many more officers, pointing out that two, 2-man patrols are completely inadequate for the task of policing such a large mountainous area.
It is important to point out that because the Alpujarra is mountainous, the roads detour for miles keeping to the contours of the hills; thus making journeys even between two neighbouring locations, as the crow flies, a time consuming journey.
Secondly, ever since a Rajoy government made major manpower cuts to the Guardia Civil, this police force has been struggling to cover all its obligations.
