Jitters over Breakwater Progress

The Chairman of the Asociación de Empresarios de Playas de la Costa Tropical, Francisco Trujillo, has made public his feelings on the progress of the Motril breakwater/groyne work.

“After a short pause or parenthesis in the work owing to a lack of material [rocks from Lobres quarry] we’re getting worried that the work may not be finished before summer of 2025, which is what the Government promised,” he said.

He went on to say, “If the job isn’t finished by mid June, we’re going to ask the Subdelegación del Gobierno to halt work, putting a deadline on the 15th of June.”

If this is the case, he says, he will ask for that section of the beach to be cleaned up, leaving it in perfect condition for the summer: “We can’t get it into our heads that all those work cabins and machinery could still be around in the middle of the beach because it would be disastrous for our image as far as tourism goes,” he admitted.

He also referred to this coming Easter, “This year it will fall around the middle of April, which is a time that people start using the beaches; people are already turning up on weekends. In Easter, which is the preamble of the high season, we have to project a good image to those visitors.”
