Independent councillor in Almuñécar Town Hall Council, Daniel Barbero wants the ruling party to purchase land in La Herradura for a new high school backed by the PSOE opposition party.
The PSOE and Councilor Barbero put forward a modification to the budget, arguing that the IES Villanueva del Mar de la Herradura needs to be relocated.
The school today is located on the Paseo Andrés Segovia, in an old building built by the Ministry of Education & Science, in 1976, as a junior school with eight classrooms. It was temporarily adapted in 2003 to the needs of secondary education until a new school could be built.
Both the IES School Board and the Education Delegation itself wrote to the Town Hall in 2008 and 2018 requesting that the school be transferred to a plot measuring some 8,000 sq/m where a new secondary school should be erected.
PSOE Spokeswoman, Rocío Palacios, recalls that in September 2019, her party put forward a motion at a Plenary Meeting calling upon the Council to acquire this 8,000-sq/m plot. At the time, she said, “We were told by the governing cabinet that they foresaw the acquisition of a plot of 10,817 sq/m next to Las Gaviotas junior school where the municipal plant nursery stands.”
To her party’s surprise, on the PGOU (General Urban Development Plan) that was being drawn up the said plot no longer figured on the document but rather the Camping de La Herradura was marked down as an “Educational Area.”
“The PP has been in power for 14 years and are still unable to handle the acquisition of a plot of land for a new high school,” the PSOE point out. They say that the Mayor plans to buy the old Cine Auditorio for 1.2m euros but cannot find the money to buy a plot of land for the badly needed village high school.
On the 30th of January the 2025 Presupuesto General del Ayuntamiento de Almuñécar received its preliminary approval in the Plenary Meeting of the Town Council. It will receive its final approval following 15 days on public display prior to it being printed in the Official Provincial Gazette (BOP).
