Restrictions off Punta de La Mona

The Junta’s Ministry of Sustainability and Environment has issued an order under which various activities are regulated within the Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) Acantilados y Fondos Marinos de la Punta de La Mona, La Herradura.

This area is one of the enclaves that make up the Red de Espacios Naturales Protegidos de Andalucía (RENPA) and the Red Natura 2000, for its high ecological value. It contains Hábitats de Interés Comunitario (HIC) and has a rich biodiversity.

Because of this area’s importance, some kinds of fishing activities are forbidden, such as the collection of shellfish off the rocks or on the seabed from a boat. Furthermore, recreational craft without motors, such as pedaloes, kayaks, canoes, etc require permission when groups of more than five craft are together.

Jet skis are also forbidden from entering these waters, as well as passengers or crew from boats of any kind (with or without a motor) trying to land at the base of the Acantilados.

As far as diving is concerned, the intention to dive in this area must be communicated beforehand to the  Delegación Territorial de Sostenibilidad y Medio Ambiente in Granada.

Access to the cliffs on foot for investigative or restoration purposes also require previously obtained permission, along with educational or sporting events, professional filming and even seabed clean-up operations.

Lastly, the order expressly forbids the use of loudhailers (megaphones), fireworks, the removal of marine or cultural resources, the damaging of rocks or the flora/fauna, as well as any kind of dumping from boats.
