The most emblematic feature of Nerja is undoubtably the Balcón de Europa, perhaps a distinction shared with the Cuevas de Nerja.
The Balcón is a paseo that sticks out to sea, sat on a small headland, rather that running along side the coast, as is the case of most paseos marítimos (seafront promenades) that you will come across.

It has had changes over the centuries (Its origins were actually a medieval castle, known simply as the Castillo Bajo) and is undergoing one now, despite the town bursting with winter visitors and residents.
The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo (PP), explained, “This action not only seeks to preserve this important tourist and historical enclave, but also to offer a better image for the enjoyment of residents and tourists who visit our tourist flagship every day.”
The work is being carried out by a local company, Jimedux S. L. U., working to a budget of 85,239 euros. Funding comes both from the municipal coffers and from the Junta de Andalucía’s Board of Tourism.
The remodelling work, which started off at the foot of the El Salvador Church, should take two months.
