Leroy Merlin Scam

The amount and variety of SMS and email scams that internet users receive is constantly growing, unfortunately and the latest involves one supposedly from Leroy Merlin with an “incredible offer.”

The offer-not-to-be-missed is the obtention without cost of one of Leroy Merlin’s products by simply answering a questionaire.

Anyway, Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (Consumers’ Rights Organisation) issued this warning. The questionaire promises that you will receive in the post a Leroy-Merlín brand, Dexter. The lucky winner only has to pay the postal charges… and that’s the trap!

So what does the email look like? The text might vary but it goes along these lines: “Tenemos una sorpresa para los clientes de Leroy Merlin. ¡Completa nuestra encuesta de Leroy Merlin y desbloquea un juego de herramientas Dexter!”

The sender’s email address has nothing to do with L.M. but rather XXX@denant.elecommunals.com. That, in itself, should be a wake up call. The text itself is an image which you are invited to click on

You land on a page that has nothing to do with Leroy Merlin, although it does use the companies colours and logo to give it authenticity.

Just to inspire you more, there is a counter running and you are urged to respond as time is running out before the offer ends. You’ll see the electric tool in question and the message that you have to send two euros to cover postage and packaging.

Then of course, you’re asked for you full name, address, phone number and email… and then you credit card details including the CVV. Now if you haven’t realised you’re being scammed by now… But let’s say you continue on, after giving them all this info. You’re told to click on PAGAR and an error message comes up, but you can keep your two euros but not the balance of your credit card.

So, if you get an email from Leroy Merlin with this offer, don’t open it, just erase it. If you did give them all your info, then contact your bank so that they can cancel the card.

Remember, if it’s too good to be true, then it probably isn’t.
