The Coordinator of the Organisation for agricultural & Livestock farmers has warned about a generalised drop in price for vegetables, especially Dutch cucumbers.
This trend comes in the 47th week of production, a key moment of the campaign, without finding a compelling or justified reason to explain the situation, which places prices below production costs, in the markets on the Costa Tropical and on the coast of Almería.
According to several sources in the agricultural sector, they are sending products as ‘open price sales’, which is a practice that is expressly prohibited in the Ley de la Cadena, resulting in the collapse of the price at origin; i.e., production costs.
The workers’ union, COAG Granada warns that this price crisis is not based on a solid justification or a coherent explanation. Consequently, meetings are taking place between groups of producers to take the appropriate actions such as a protest for the beginning of next week, if the situation does not change.
COAG Granada says that discarding part of the production to bring prices up might be painful, but worth it, if it stamps out this crisis. However, this measure needs to be followed unanimously by all farmers.
Editorial comment: unfortunately, there will be some that sell, thus selling their colleagues out. Another point to take into consideration is an over production of cucumbers, which would not be the first time, as it inevitably slashes prices.
