Tonnes… Not Grams

Officers belonging to the Policía Nacional and officials from the Spanish Customs Agency intercepted a shipment of 13,062 kilos of cocaine in Algeciras Port.

This colossal amount of cocaine represents the biggest bust, ever, in Spain for this kind of drug and the second biggest in the whole of Europe.

Consequent police raids also included homes and offices in Madrid and Alicante and led to one arrest. The two people who run the import company that handled this shipment are on the run and an international arrest warrant has been issued for their capture.

The shipping container in which the drugs were hidden (if you can actually hide 13 tonnes of the stuff) was sent from a port in Ecuador called Puerto de Guayaquil bound for the Puerto de Algeciras, which is right next to Gibraltar (at the other end of the bay).

During normal inspection procedure, the customs officers came upon discrepancies in the paperwork. Furthermore, the Ecuadorian exporting company already had a history of drug shipments. So they opened the shipping container…

The illicit cargo was hidden behind a wall of genuine banana crates, which was the same packaging, however, used to conceal the drugs behind this first row of crates.
