Motril has finally approved low-emission zoning, which it was obligated to do as it has over 50,000 inhabitants.
State and EU legistlation aims to reduce dependency on private transport and reduce pollution in cities, thus improving the quality of urban life.

Mayor Luisa García Chamorro emphasised the importance of this initiative and assured that new low-emission zones would not affect, in any way, los Motrileños empadronados, who pay the municipal vehicle tax (IVTM).
She said that its implementation would begin with a trial period of three years, during which no fines will be levied.
Before we go any further, it is worth mentioning the affected streets: Camino de las Cañas, Mercado Alto, Cuatro Esquinas, Calle Nueva, Avenida de Andalucía, Avenida de Salobreña, Calle José Felipe Soto, Calle Borde de la Acequia, Plaza de la Tenería, Calle San Agustín, Calle Ruiz, Calle Señor de Junes and Rambla del Manjón.
The New Mobility Plan will be divided into three parts:
1) Studying traffic flow in Motril, including parking and public transport in order to understand what measures would be the most adequate for the town.
2) The short, medium and long-term measure in key areas will be worked out, such as public transport pedestrian, and cycle areas.
3) Owing to the town’s small urban traffic flow, pollution is “favourable” so restrictions in the low-emission zones will only be applied to vehicles within the B category, or those without stickers, or are not registed on the municipal IVTM records; i.e., out of towners.
As there is a long trial period, fining will not be coming into force until 2028.
