Sierra Nevada

This time it has snowed in earnest up on the Sierra Nevada, bringing the skiing season just a little bit closer.

The semi public company that runs the ski station, Cetursa, is estatic: “The snowfall has been marvellous; more so from 2,000 metres where it has been more copious.”

The Cetursa maintains, however, that the season will begin on the last weekend of November. The fact is, that this snow could disappear as quickly as it appeared, thanks to the erratic weather, fruit of climate change. A lot can happen in the 30 days between now and then.

However, ingrained pessimism aside, there appears to be more snow on the way, but further up the mountainside.

Whatever the case, seeing snow up there, gives justification to its name, ‘Snowcapped Mountain’ (Sierra Nevada) and does not only bring Granada winter’s attractions closer, but also is a reassuring amount of water in storage to fill the reservoirs when the melt comes.

As for temperatures, Sunday afternoon (when this image was taken) it was between one and three degrees below zero whereas in the cold of night, up at the 2,800 mark… it was 24ºC below.
