Two athletes died during swimming and running events as part of a triathlon competition in Torremolinos on the 17th of this month.
One of the victims was British and the other Mexican, aged 57 and 79, respectively. One athlete died during the running event of the competition whilst the other man felt unwell in the swimming event and later died.

Both competitors were competing in the Age-Groups Categories, which is where the majority of competitors belong, as they are not athletes although they are fit; some are even ex-athletes. Each group covers a range of four years with the category for the eldest being between 90 and 94 (men) and 85-89 (women).
After the death became known, the World Federation, published a communiqué stating: “With deep sadness we make it known that two participants (one from Mexico and one from Great Britain) died in the World Triathlon Championship Series Torremolinos-Andalucía. Our most sincere condolences to their families and friends…”
