A couple and their two children died in a flat fire in Guillena (Sevilla) because security bars on their windows blocked their escape.

This incident happened last Sunday but recent information from the Fire Investigators show that the it was probably caused by a by an e-Scooter that was charging on the ground floor in a space beneath the stairs.

The fire was reported around eight in the morning and it spread rapidly through the 2-storey house, with all its windows having rejas.

The flames spread up the stairs but there was no escape because of the security bars on all the windows. They tried to reach the roof terrace but the door was locked so they were overcome by the smoke, all huddled together.

“The house has rejas on all its windows, which is the custom in our town,” explained the Mayor of the municipality, Lorenzo Medina, with just under 3,000 inhabitants.

The parents worked in a grocery shop and the children played in the local football team, he explained.

The emergency call centre began to receive dozens of agitated calls with people explaining that the flames were spreading very fast through the house and that there was a family trapped inside.
