Otívar Landslip Problem

Our colleagues at infocostatropical did an informative article on the landslip, which occurred over six months ago in Otivar on the track down to the Fábrica de Sierra (the river) and has still not been sorted.

This is the track known as La Cunilla, which leads down from Cazulas Manor down to the river where what remains of the Marquesa’s swimming pool is.

Along this track are at least five dwellings, some of which are in continuous use. Obviously, for those that live down there, it is a ridiculous, if not shameful, state of affairs that this track has not been fully reopened.

The Provincial Council was informed of the problem two weeks after the landslip by the Mayor of Otívar, Paco Robles. The Chairman of the Council pledged to cover the cost of sorting out the track, which amounts to 35,000 euros.

Bear in mind that the hillside is unstable, which led to the landslip, so there is a danger of more coming down when the rocks are cleared away.

Now, it’s not only the case of people who live down there, but this track serves as access to a lot of farmland (fruit orchards) and the harvest period for avocados is upon us.

Is there an alternative way in and out? Yes, but this alternative track is in a bad state because a dozen years ago or so, it was deliberately blocked at the bottom end because it was an alternative way to the Junta de Los Ríos (without having to pass the entrance gate and pay booth). With so many years of disuse, you can imagine what state it’s in.

The Provincial Council when approached about this problem that has dragged on half a year, said that it’s all a question of finding the funds, which have to come in the shape of a grant from the Junta de Andalucia or the Central Government from funds to cover emergencies. The Council says that it hopes all the paperwork can be sorted out this month so that work can commence.

Nobody is holding their breath, which is why there is a meeting next week between the Mayor and those affected to see what is really going on. In the meantime, the rains are on their way…
