Fly Tipping Campaign

Motril Town Hall has started a new campaign to heighten awareness to the importance of disposing of rubbish in a responsible manner.

The campaign has the slogan of Atentan Contra (Under Attack) and aims to highlight the negative effect of simply dumping rubbish other than in its proper places; something that the Town Hall points out has increased over the summer.

The place chosen to announce this new campaign was next to the Punto Limpio. There, the Councillor for Urban Quality, Juan Hernández, said that everytime somebody dumps rubbish, it is an attack on all of us and our surroundings.

Councillor Hernández said that during the summer they had detected several ‘blackspots’ where uncontrolled fly tipping was taking place, which is a health problem and an eyesore.

The Councillor for Citizen Safety, José Peña, said that the Policía Local was going step up surveillance of these blackspots using both patrols and drones to indentify the culprits.

He pointed out that residents have a telephone line (958 600 200) and an email addrress (policialocal.motril.es) where they can report cases of illegal dumping, adding that those that simply dump rubbish face fines of between 300 and 1,500 euros, depending on whether the person is a repeat offender as well as the environmental impact caused.

He ended by asking residents to take more care when taking their rubbish to the designated hoppers and not simply leaving their rubbish lying on the ground next to them

Editorial comment: it would help if these specialised hoppers/containers were emptied regularly because they often end up overflowing, leaving people no other option other than to leave the rubbish next to the brimming containers. The trouble is that, perhaps, a company nailed the province-wide contract for emptying the different recycle hoppers and keep their rounds to a minimum to save money.
