The water-utility company, Aguas y Servicios, which holds a contract from the Mancomunidad, is busy clearing out the rain drains along the Costa Tropical.
This is in preparation for the rains that accompany late summer and early autumn.

At the moment Aguas y Servicios are (or will be) working in Motril, Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, Lújar, Torrenueva Costa, Almuñécar, Otívar, Jete, Lentegí, Salobreña, Molvízar, Ítrabo, Albuñol, Albondón, Rubite, Polopos-La Mamola and Sorvilán.
These 16 municipalities have 481 kilometres of drains amongst them with 13,243 rain drains to clear out. According to the water-utility company, up to the 31st of August they had cleared out 21,763 drains, which means many of them have had litter and debris hooked out of them twice.
The said company points out that some rain-drainage systems belong to private urbanizaciones, which do not come under their remit.
The Manager of Aguas y Servicios, Alejandro Jurado said, “The sea starts in our homes, which is why we should not dispose of baby wipes, ear swabs or any type of oil down toilets, as they block up the sewage system.”
