Carchuna and Calahonda, two of Motril's municipal dependencies, have a fixed population of 4,300, yet they only have two doctors to cover the whole population.
Residents are not happy about this and consider the situation “unsustainable.”
If that is the situation during the year, imagine what it’s like in summer with nearly four times that amount of people between residents and visitors. Yet, the number of medical staff is not adjusted to this influx.
For residents during the year it is quite normal to have to wait to get an appointment for a cold, for example, by which time they are over it. The solution that many take is to go to Motril, if somebody gets sick, especially in the case of children
The fault does not lie with the existing medical staff, who work miracles to get through about 90 appointments a day, meaning that they remain after hours to clear them, despite not getting paid for this overtime.
And then, if the Junta does send in medical staff in the summer, where are they going to stay? Some unemployed doctors and nurses just find it unworkable to even attempt.
The Mayor says that there is talk of coming street protests.
Editorial comment: there is never any shortage to find salaries for politicians, yet they are the first to say that there is no money for more doctors and nurses.
