Peña Escrita Hill Fire

A hill fire broke out behind and above La Herradura and Almuñécar, in the area of Peña Escrita, which is still ongoing.

The latest update from Infoca was about 30 minutes ago, saying that there were 160 boots on the ground, four fire trucks and that one single-engine, water-bomber airplane and a semi-heavy helicopter had returned to the fire.

The previous evening, there had been one, twin rotor, heavy helicopter, one single-rotor, semi-heavy helicopter, and two single-engine, airplanes operating out of the Infoca base in La Resinera near Jayena.

The situation at dawn was very complicated for the firefighters on the ground because of gusting winds of between 60 and 80 kmp, which were causing small secondary fires from burning embers.

Together with the Infoca air and land units, the Almuñécar fire service is deployed with two of its fire trucks in the area of Los Mateos just below Peña Escrita.

The Mayor, Juan José Ruíz Joya, also called for the cooperation of the Nerja and Motril fire services.

Yesterday evening, aircraft only had about an hour or so of daylight to act against the fire before they were withdrawn at nightfall.

At least one elderly couple were evacuated from their cortijo but information is scant.
