What? No Jellyfish?

During previous summers we've suffered jellyfish swarms all along the coast, but this year no such swarms or blooms, are absent.

OK, you’re probably thinking, “You and your big mouth!” and think that stating this was tempting fate. Ya got me!

However, the number of stings that the Cruz Roja are having to deal with is 90% down on last summer. Furthermore, not once on any of our beaches have they had to fly the yellow flag denoting the presence of jellyfish.

The Head of Aula del Mar, Julio de La Rosa, says this notable absence of jellyfish blooms is down to several factors with the main one being sea currents.

The wind moves the surface water and water from below comes up to the surface, along with our touchy friends. In other words, conditions just have not been favourable for breeding or their appearance, brought by currents, this summer so far.

Yet, we’re just at the beginning of August and there are a lot of beach days left before summer ends, so keep your fingers crossed.
