Around a score of flats had to be evacuated following a fire on the ground floor of a block of flats on the La Mamola (Polopos) seafront.

The fire began in a Chinese bazar a little before one o’clock yesterday morning on Calle Doctor Sánchez Moreno, which is the beachfront road

The emergency call centre began to receive alerts shortly afterwards and quickly despatched the Motril fire service, accompanied by the Policía Local, Guardia Civil and an ambulance.

The 4-storey block of flats was evacuated, involving between 40 to 50 residents, but once the fire was out they were allowed to return to their beds.

The fire service said that the flames had affected around a third of the premises although the rest of the shop ony suffered smoke damage.
