Cástaras Domestic Water Problems

The Public Health Ministry belonging to the Junta de Andalucía has declared two sources of water used for domestic consumption in the Alpujarra village as not apt for human consumption.

An analysis of the mains water found Escherichia Coli  and coliform bacteria in the samples taken. Consequently the Ministry prohibits the water’s use as drinking water, for oral hygiene on utensils in contact with food, nor as an ingredient in food preparation.

Of course, this restriction does not affect house cleaning or bathroom use other than cleaning  your teeth.

Consequently, the Town Hall, under whose responsibility it is to provide a safe domestic water supply, has to  take the necessary measures to rectify the situation, starting with an investigation into the source of the bacteria.

Once the source had been found and eliminated, new samples must be taken in the village and once three consecutive negative samples (24 hours between each one) have shown the system clean, then the restrictions can be lifted.

In the meantime, the Town Hall must provide an alternative source of drinking water, and if that means having it tankered in, the source must have a clean bill of health, too.
