Almuñécar's Chiringuito Deportivo on Paseo de Reina Sofa (opposite the water park) opened its door 41 years ago and was set to celebrate the anniverary, but a fire put paid to that.

It was around 06.30h yesterday morning when the fire began inside the chiringuito and it wasn’t long before the fire service, Guardia Civil and Policía Local turned up. The fire was soon dealt with but the damage in the kitchen means that the owner might no be opening any time soon.

Although what caused the fire is still not known, a short circuit is what everybody suspects.

The business owner, Rubén Jerónimo, had to inform everybody who had made a booking for that day that their reservations had be cancelled, obviously.

However, he is confident that he can have the chiringuito’s doors open to customers this summer as the dining area and other installations have not been damaged by the fire in the kitchen. In the meantime, its ten employees (13 to 14 on weekends) are out of a job.

Rubén assures that although there have been cases of break-ins, they have never suffered a fire in the 41 years of the chiringuito’s existence.
