The Guardia Civil rescued a man in his 90s in Algarinejo after having fallen down a barranco near his home and having spent two days down there.

GRA PON Elderly Man Rescued from Bottom of BarrancoIt was on the 26th of last month, around nine in the morning when the Town Hall’s Social Services Department alerted the police to the disappearance of an elderly man.

The victim received home visits from social workers but he had not opened his door to them when they called. From outside they could see that his bed had not been slept in and that his medication was still on his bedside table, which his helper had placed there on Wednesday the 24th.

The Guardia Civil contacted relatives to gain permission from them for them to force the door to the dwelling, which they obtained. Searching the dwelling they not only found that it was empty, but they also found a walking stick that the victim needed to walk.

When officers approached the property’s fence that bordered the barranco, one of them heard a weak voice coming from the bottom. They quickly picked their way to the bottom, some 40 metres, and found the victim conscious but confused, sporting bruises and cuts on his hands and feet. He told them that he had been trapped down there for two days, calling for help.

The officers with the help of neighbours managed to bring the elder man back up using a stretcher from an ambulance waiting up top. The paramedics checked him over and decided to take him to hospital, the PTS in Granada, where he remains under observation.
