On the 18th of July it will be 100th anniversary of the Puente de Lata; i.e, the old, metal railway bridge over Río Dúrcal.
One hundred years ago the structure was brought from Gor to be assembled over the Río Dúrcal gorge as part of the narrow-gauge line that connected the provincial capital with Dúrcal. From there goods would be transferred to an overhead or aerial line that ended in Motril Port near the beach that bears its name, Playa El Cable.
The Mayor of Dúrcal, Julio Prieto, together with other members of the Town Council, presented what will be the design logo on the 20th of last month for the 100th anniversary event.
“We’re going to try and make this logo widely known through the media and will be present at all the cultural and sporting events that we will be holding this year,” explained Mayor Prieto.
The anniversary event will include live music, workshops and educational activities for kids amongst other cultural and sporting events, with the participation of cultural associations and entities within the municipality.
Finally, the Town Hall is going to try and install the lighting on the bridge, to replace the previous lighting system that suffered vandalism and theft.
