The Guarida Civil Cyber-Crime Department has issued a warning concerning a hoax going around on Internet concerning ATMs.
Apparently there is a message making the rounds on Whatsapp claiming that by putting your pin number in the wrong way, it will automatically send an alert to the police, telling them that you’re in trouble.
This is blatantly not true as no system exists in Spain, or probably elsewhere.
The ATM programme will only accept the correct PIN so if you tap it in the wrong way round, it will simply record it as an error and invite you to try again – get it wrong twice more and it will swallow your card.
The police suggest that for your own safety use ATM cubicles that have locks on them if they are within the entrance to a bank branch. If you do have problems, then phone the police, otherwise they won’t be aware of your situation.
