It has become plainly obvious that the culprit(s) behind these deliberate fires on Salobreña Vega act when there is a forecast for strong winds.
Last night there were strong winds and almost predictably a large fire sprang up on the vega amongst wild cane behind Playa de la Cagadilla.
The fire was first reported on the Camino de los Pescadores (on the municipal limit with Motril) just before eight in the evening.
Councillor for Citizen Safety, Antonio Rodríguez Molina, explained that around midnight another fire sprung up near the landing strip for the Club Aeromodelismo Costa Tropical.
Fire personnel from Motril had their work cut out for them and it wasn’t until around three in the morning that the fires were put out, although with daylight there was still drifting smoke.
