Please Sit But Not Too Long

How long can you linger with just one drink before the bar or cafetería waiter starts giving you the evil eye?

GRA CM La QarmitaWell, in the case of a rather comfy looking establishment in Granada, you get the time limit written on your drink-purchase ticket.

La Qarmita is in fact a library-cafeteria found in the centre of Granada on Calle Águila. In such a setting, it is inviting to spend a while reading but there are those that push it, of course – a cold day, nothing to do, a cosy atmosphere and not a lot of coppers in your pocket.

The system is simple; when you buy a coffee or a beer, let’s say, on the purchase ticket you will find a hand-written notation letting you know that when the time indicated arrives, you either order something else or hit the streets.

So, how long do you get? The time limit on the cheaper drinks is one hour, which is more than reasonable but if you ask for something more expensive, like a coffee and piece of cake, or something stronger to drink, the time limit is longer, more like three hours.

La Qarmita is somewhere to read, study or work with a laptop using their WIFI, for example, or even play a board game like chess. There have been customers who have spent eight hours there – we don’t know what they consumed but this might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, perhaps.

On a final note; the amount of time you get also depends on how busy they are.
