Yet another alert from the police over cyber tricksters, this time involving an SMS.
The Policía Nacional published this warning on their social-media accounts after receiving numerous complaints from victims of these estafas (fraud schemes).
If you receive an SMS saying that your bank card has been deactivated for security reasons with a link to reactivate it, do not click on the link, unless you want to invite a stranger to help himself to your bank balance.
The SMS reads: Su tarjeta ha sido inhabilitada debido a los nuevos cambios de seguridad. Acceda al enlace para reactivarla. (your card has been deactivated because of changes to security measures – click on the link to reactivate it).
The URL might look bona fide but it’s as dodgy as a nine-bob note (showing my age). The landing page will also look like a bank webpage and there you will be asked for info that will be used to empty your account.
The Policía Nacional say that if you have inadvertently clicked on the link, get hold of your bank branch immediately so that they can prevent any fraudulent access.
