Drug bust in Almuñécar & Motril

A joint operation between Customs & Excise, the Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil cracked a drugs shipment via Málaga Port, that has local ramifications.

AND Drugs Bust 31OC23A shipment of 720 kilos of cocaine came into Málaga Port at the end of September amongst a cargo from Costa Rica, which was later intercepted.

Drugs were found in a large metal container hidden under 19 tonnes of scrap, mainly aluminium, in a shipping container.

Eight people were arrested, two of whom had previous convictions in relation to intercepted drugs coming into Algeciras in 2018, for which they did time.

Consequent investigative work turned up links to both Almuñécar and Motril as part of a criminal organisation based in Campo de Gibraltar (that’s an area on the Spanish side of the Gibraltar border).

The police had been monitoring the shipments from an export company in Costa Rica using shipping containers, keeping an eye on where they went after leaving the port. One of the lorries transporting a shipping container detoured from its route and headed for a property in a wooded area within the municipality of Alcalá de los Gazules.

The police immediately obtained a warrant to search the premises and located the shipping container.

Once it was emptied, they found the metal box amongst the scrap and inside the 720 kilos of cocaine in 1.2k bags. There followed the arrests and home searches of those detained. They found, amongst other confiscated items, a Guardia Civil uniform, large amounts of cash, and an electronic device for monitoring radio frequencies used by the police.

No information has been released about what the connections are with Almuñécar and Motril, but no doubt further information will be available.
