AXA Rio Velez Forest Project OC23The chosen area covers 35 hectares and borders with Torre del Mar to the east and Almayate to the west.

Intensive farming (greenhouses and pesticide use) is a constant threat to this area, which has enormous ecological and environmental value.

For this reason, Axarquía Nature Studies Office (GENA)-Ecologists in Action has proposed creating an urban woodland on this land, with the creation of paths and sheltered spots so that  people can enjoy a natural environment. It is, after all, officially catagorised as, a wetland.

The project is entitled, Torre del Mar Urban Forest, and in order to make it public, they have scheduled a series of activities aimed this week.

They have also presented it to the Vélez-Málaga Town Council and the Mayor’s Office of Torre del Mar. The activities count on the collaboration of the Sociedad de Amigos de la Cultura, Emergencia Climática Axarquía, Birdwatching Axarquía and Amigos de la Desembocadura del Vélez.
