LHR Rubbish Lorry Goes Up in Flames OC23The vehicle belonged to the paper-recycling, collection company, the FCC, who hold the municipal contract.

This was the point where the vehicle had reached when the fire started inside.

It had stopped to empty the paper-recycling bins next to the Cuesta del Marchante/N-340 junction in La Herradura.

The driver, upon noticing the fire, decided to dump the load onto the road so that the fire wouldn’t reach the cabin while he waited for the Almuñécar fire service to arrive, but there was concern that the flames could set off the nearby pines on the edge of the road.

However, the Almuñécar fire service soon arrived at the scene and the fire was dealt with before it could spread to the pinewoods.

“The area affected by the fire was cleared up and things have returned to normal,” explained the Councillor for the Environment, Lucía González, adding that the schedule for emptying the said bins would not suffer any alteration because another vehicle has been brought in to cover the route.
