Azucenas Drugs Landing

The Policía Nacional intercepted a drug-running operation where the gang hoped to land five tonnes of hashish on a Motril beach.

MOT Playa AzucenasIt was in the early hours of Tuesday on Playa Las Azucenas that the authorities detected suspicious activity. An unloading operation was going on at 05.00h.

Yet it wasn’t going to plan even before the police got there, because a rival gang got there first and wanted to help themselves to the other’s merchandise.

When the officers from the Policía Nacional burst onto the beach there was already a scuffle going on between the two rival gangs.

This beach is a favourite for drug runners because behind it is extensive undergrowth and being next to the port, there are plenty of tracks and lanes in the area which can be used to gain immediate access to the A-44/A-7. It is precisely for the above reasons that this beach is so closely watched by the police.

The night ended with 5,000 kilos of confiscated hashish, as well as several vehicles impounded. As for the gang members, some fled the scene in a car in the direction of Almería but not before ramming a patrol car that tried to intercept them.

Although they got away, the police have the car details and will track down the owner.
