The Almuñécar opposition party, IU, has registered a motion with the Town Council to debate the possibility of owners of garages parking in front of them.
A quick explanation: to stop people parking in front of your garage, you have to apply for a vado so that if somebody does park there, blocking the entrance to your garage, you can call the Town Hall to have it towed away for causing an obstruction.
The word vado translates for ford; i.e., a lower section of curb where you can ‘ford’ the pavement to reach your garage.
Anyway, according to the local, party leader for IU, Francisco Fernández, the municipality faces a lack of parking spaces, forcing its inhabitants, as well as visitors, to spend more and more time and money on parking. They are also forced to park further away from where they want to go in town.
Sr. Fernández points out that in some municipalities the bylaw has been modified allowing the owners of vados to authorise this
It seems that Almuñécar Town Council would have to modify the standing bylaw to allow the owners of vados to park in front of their garages, as well as to authorise other vehicles to do so.
The bylaw, as it stands, states that nobody, not even the owner of the vado, can park there. If he does and it coincides with the tow truck doing its rounds, the vehicle will be towed away.
Editorial comment: It might help parking in general if owners of private garages stop being lazy and park their vehicles inside, instead of taking up parking spaces on the street.
