One of the Traffic Police's choppers (Pegasus) used to catch drivers committing infractions crash landed over in the province of Almería yesterday.
The crash site was near Cortijo Blanco (La Mojonera), which is about half way to the city of Almería from the Granada Province limits.
The accident occurred around 12.40h near the A-7 autovía. After receiving an alert, 112 despatched the Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional, fire service and an ambulance.
Fortunately, only one person onboard required medical assistance as he was groggy from the impact, which is hardly surprising given the circumstances.
The accident occurred as the aircraft was taking off after the tail rotor blades hit the branches of a nearby tree – a gust had displaced the helicopter towards the trees, according to the Provincial Head of the Almería Traffic Department, José María Méndez.
The Pegasus helicopter, which is based in the Centro de Gestión del Tráfico de Málaga, was sent to keep an eye on the traffic produced by a music festival, Dreambeach Villaricos, which was being held in Cuevas del Almanzora.
