Three days ago, Infoca published information on how much land was affected by fires within the province during 2022: a total of 2,648 hectares.
For those that follow football and have an idea how big a football pitch is (roughly, 8,000 sq/m), that’s equivalent to 3,310 football pitches. Together with the loss of trees, 2,667 hectares of mountain-shrub land was scorched.
The publication of these figures coincides, more or less, with the recent fire in Albuñuelas, so this year, we are off again already. The Albuñuelas fire was close to the affected area from last year’s fire. It took two helicopters and ground fire-fighters to control it and finally put it out.
One of the major fires was the huge one that affected Los Guájares and Albuñuelas. Although investigators know that it was caused by human intervention; i.e., it wasn’t a lightning strike or sparks from HT lines, the Guardia Civil still haven’t come up with the culprit.
Although Infoca are active all year, clearing excessive vegetation near roads and tracks, renewing firebreaks and shoring up land affected by fires so that heavy rainfall does not carry away the unprotected soil, the summer fire-fighting campaign doesn’t begin until the 1st of June.

So if a Court fines Billy few mates. He goes to jail for non payment. ??
But Bertie big nose, with loads of in common cause . Can thumb his nose at the Courts. Spain is a wonderful Country.
But enforcement of Court Orders and Punishment of these types of issue really should be enforced.
If it was. Then maybe people would stop planting illegal crops and irrigation of much needed water.
Patrick: yes, you are correct, but the Mayor and his predecessor have a habit of ignoring court sentences, which the case of the overtime payments and the two urbanizaciones that it should be looking after but has still not moved a finger. There’s money to pay for oversized furniture on beaches, but not for paying people what they owe them, it seems.
If we have both national police and local police, why is it that the Fire Service is almost a ghost service? Yes, it costs money to run, but it’s better to have them and Infoca more readily available and more highly trained.
What is it? Two persons on a fire truck; more in bigger towns.
If there’s money to spend on grants for non-opening Hotels and nice sculptures for beaches, there must be government grants for these services to be full time!
Fred: Totally agree. All fire-fighting personnel should be hired all year round – more salaries for this service and fewer for politicians.
Alas therein lies a major problem, the summer fire fighting campaign starts on 1 June but it’s tinder dry now and no doubt as was the case near Valencia there will be many wild/human inspired fires by then
