Almuñécar Farmers Protest

A group of farmers belonging to the Asociación Verde, Seco y Jate protested outside Hotel Almuñécar Playa where the PP were holding a party convention with the Junta PM attending.

ALM Farmers Protest outside Hotel Almuñécar Playa“Irrigation farmers demand urgent and immediate measures from the Junta as a solution to this very grave situation that our agriculture is suffering, which is on the point of collapse, owing to salt water coming into the water table, threatening to ruin thousands of families in Almuñécar and La Herradura,” said José Luis Ruiz Olivares, who is the Chairman of the Asociación Verde-Seco-Jate.

He went on to say, “Although the Prime Minister of Andalucía didn’t think it necessary to attend to the demands of those gathered outside, the MP for Agriculture for the Junta did agree to a meeting next week.”

The said association demanded that the solution should be for the benefit of all farmers and not just limit itself to solving the problem of only two irrigation associations, leaving 80% of irrigated land without an solution.

Well meaning politicians and humble farmers. !! I think that’s a contradiction in terms. ??
Unless you meant well meaning to line my pockets and or humble as I’ve finally been caught out planting and using water after a few years. ??

Hmmm tarmacking minor roads is typically a short term political win with v little benefit ie for folk who want to drive faster. Unless investment in water storage and more water efficient irrigation , plus of course clamping down on illegal farms, then alas it’s good night Vienna and not just for farmers!!

what we have is an environmental disaster created by well meaning politicians and humble farmers with long standing relationships driven by the glory of possible profit and uniformed of the scientific consequences of monofarming

Maybe do both. Stop wasting monies on sticking plaster, look at me, vote catches. Invest in what will be required in the near future or even yesterday. Do country roads really need tarmacking so badly.? My experiences of going further inland. Is that the locals tend to drive a bit too fast and long term foreigners a bit too slow. Put that money into a big pot.
Closing down illegal farms. Hmm. Not a vote winner out here. Stricter water controls, ditto.
Build new reservoirs. Should have been done yesterday. No matter what land owners nose is put out of joint.
The few sometimes have to suffer for the majority. !
Solar farms. Always a sticky issue. I believe a few years ago. Promises or pledges were made on fantastic returns on solar. So people invested. Sadly too much and on fickle government promises. So start again. Use the fields for growing if we have water. Use disused warehousing roofs for solar panels. Simples. !!??

Patrick: well, we don’t want another flash flood like we had some years back but yes, the Town Hall should stop farmers clearing and planting yet more plantations.

Dunno. Unless the Gods make it rain slowly for weeks on end. Their is no answer. Other then not letting the over farmed land and crops suffer. With the legal and illegal farmed lands losing their crops. Farmers become bankrupt. Food not exported and prices increase. Rather then ploughing €700000 into clearing vegetation in the ramblas. Put it to storing any water we can grab and really sorting out the illegal farming. !!??
