Two police forces, the Policía Nacional and the Guardia Civil, together with the Customs & Excise, moved in on a drugs clan based in Jete... yes, Jete!

It appears that the Policía Nacional, through their narcotics section in Motril, the Guardia Civil, through their Salobeña post, and the Customs Service, through its Grupo I de Contrabando in Motril, had all investigated separately and come up with the same conclusion, hence their working together on this case.

Each had their own operational code names: Operación Campana, Operación Gindaverde II and Operación DAVA, all of which began life in 2021 when it became known that a cortijo was being used as a large-scale cultivation centre.

Once the farm within the municipality of Jete was located, its owner identified and that of the people working there, the authorities extended the stake out and discovered that the family was using other properties for an outdoor plantation and interior ones.

As soon as all this investigation and surveillance had concluded, the officers from the three institutions moved in and made two arrests, exposing the plantations, including a bunker being used as an underground plantation illegally hooked up to a mains-electricity source under one of the buildings.

The police confiscated six tonnes of cannabis flower (cogollos) already packaged, six long-barrelled firearms (four shotguns and two rifles) and abundant ammunition.

So far, two suspects have been arrested but further arrests have not been ruled out.

Editorial comment: so they make more than just good wine in Jete! It might surprise readers to know that little jete once had the highest per capita in the whole of Spain… and no it wasn’t from drugs but from subtropical fruit.
