La Herradura RV Parking

It looks like that battle between La Herradura and camper-van visitors has reached a conclusion with a dedicated space for them.

Almuñécar Town Hall, in what has been seen as ‘short sighted,’ made it virtually impossible for RVs to park anywhere in town, especially along the paseos marítimos (seafront promenades), egged on by certain business who saw this form of accommodation as detrimental to them.

Without a doubt, RV users hadn’t helped their own case by taking over large areas of parking space with their large vehicles.

Yet finally, somebody has seen sense to set up an area where this kind of visitor can park up and spend the night called La Herradura Camper area.

The owner of the facility, Encarni Ramos, set it up on a plot of land next to the Centro Cívico where there is space for 40 RVs – depending on their size, obviously. She explained that she and her husband have thrown heart and soul into the project, which led to it opening its gates at the end of last month.

Getting anything done officially requires a mountain of patience and persistence so it no surprise that this enterprising couple have been caught up in bureaucracy for the last three years with the Junta de Andalucía and other administrations.

Such was the success of the idea that just as soon as they had opened the gates they were full. But the RV community is far from dismayed because members of internet platforms that are specialised in RV tourism have left many positive comments on their online notice boards about the site – and that is without even advertising their camper site on Internet.

The RV park has electricity, installations for emptying sewage tanks and where to fill up. The couple is now working on providing WiFi and a laundry.

However, not everybody in the village is a happy bunny about this, i.e., the hospitality sector in general and other campsites. Encarni said that they had received complaints about their opening, despite the very existence of this new facility helping to prevent camper vans using up car-parking space. She points out that they cater for a different kind of tourism and are not in competition with other campsites.
