Almuñécar Bonsai Garden Closes

It was in 2008 that the emblematic Jardín del Bonsái was inaugurated in Almuñécar, becoming an immediate, tourist attraction but now it will close its gates.

ALM Bonsai ParkJosé Antonio Joya Martín obtained the original licence to open and set up a bonsai garden, turning the Plaza Marruecos into a place visited by experts in bonsai trees from all over the world.

However, the Town Hall has given the order for the bonsai park to close until work that has to be carried out there has concluded in order to open it again.

The main opposition party, Convergencia Andaluza, considers: “It is incomprehensible that the Herrera Administration has evicted Sr. Joya Martín from the park after 15 long years.” In fact, CA Councillor, M. Luisa Díaz Rodríguez, considers that the Mayor has acted in bad faith and demands that she reconsiders and finds “the adequate administrative procedure” that would permit Sr. Joya de continue running it..

The Councillor finished by demanding the resignation of the Councillor for the Environment, Luis Aragón, and the department coordinator, Jesús Ruiz Álvarez.

But this is just one side of the story. Having spoken to Councillor Luis Aragón, it appears that the lease on this public park expired in August last year. The lease had not been extended as a new law had come into being which required certain work to be carried out, which had not been carried out by the leaseholder. However, even after two reminders from the Town Hall, Sr. Antonio Joya had not relinquished the park.

Councillor Aragón explained that the new lease conditions have to be drawn up so that the lease can be put out to bidding. Sr. Aragón pointed out that you cannot just give somebody a lease (in this case to Sr. Joya) legally without going through this public process.
