The Almuñécar branch of the far-left party, Unidas Podemos, has raised the alarm over an increment in illegal fishing around La Herradura.
They say that concerned residents of La Herradura approached them over this problem in the bay, Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo.
According to UP, it is quite common to see people landing their illegal catch on the beach, especially protected species and cephalopods (squid/cuttlefish & octopus). Nobody, observes the PA, appears to be protecting the biodiversity in the area.
Consequently, Unidas Podemos has registered a report at the Town Hall where they draw the administration’s notice to this illegal activity, which occurs even during the breeding season of species such as cephalopods.
The party recognises that in some cases people are carrying out this activity without realising that it is illegal to do so. For this reason they call upon the Town Council to increase awareness through an informative campaign. This could take the form of information boards on or near the beaches.
