A cyclist in his 40s is thought to have died from a heart attack, ascending the Carretera de la Sierra - an autopsy will confirm the exact cause of death.
He was rushed barely alive to the Hospital Virgen de las Nieves in the centre of Granada but died shortly afterwards.
The incident took place around 11.30h, Saturday, not long after a group of cycling enthusiasts set out to climb the said road. The 47-year-old victim collapsed, falling to the ground, more or less level with the Restaurante El Boliche.
Those that accompanied him immediately phoned 112 and within minutes an ambulance with a paramedic onboard arrived, together with the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil.
The attempts at CPR managed to restart the victim’s heart, which is when they rushed him to the said hospital.

If you scroll down to Patrick’s comment we both are trying to say the same thing.
No I do not agree with your comments. By the way the risk of a CE during sex could be higher. Perhaps popping an aspirin with the viagra could save your life.
“Life expectancy at 50 years of age is 7 to 8 years greater in the most physically active individuals. The benefits of exercise are not limited to healthy individuals, because regular Physical Exercise reduces recurrent events in patients with diagnosed Cardiovascular Disease.”

We will perhaps have to agree to disagree.
Cardiologist: OK, are you referring to:
A) The title.
B) The article.
C) Reader’s comments; i.e., my own.
Secondly, I was not missing your point but rather pointing out that you were putting words into my mouth (strawman argument), something which rather than rectify, you prefer to ignore and hope will go away.
Thirdly, if you were a cardiologist you would agree with the my two, self quotes included in my last response to you, something that you appear to be avoiding – I did ask you to comment on this.
Nobody has said that cycling is not healthy. The title was “avoidable;” it was not “foolish” or “inevitable” Why avoidable? Because after so many years of reporting on deaths and injuries suffered by people practicising a sport or out hiking it serves as a one-word note of caution. A cardiologist would support that concept.
You are missing the point I am trying to make here. Unless you have some undisclosed information on the unfortunate victim’s state of health prior to his physical activity that day then this is pure subjectivity and not a fact as you previously stated.
Cardiologist: Nobody said, least of all me, that “if you choose to exercise which should improve your health then you are likely to die of a cardiac event if you are in your late 40’s”.
I didn’t read past this strawman argument that you have posed as I was struggling to understand why you should claim that.
I am also struggling to understand how people can confuse the content of an article with comments made below it.
Here, let me refresh your memory should you not wish to scroll down: “Too many times a bloke reaches his mid 40s, thinks “shit, I’m getting old (40 is not old but tell that to a 40-year old); I’m going to start practicing sport as if I were a 20-year-old just to prove I’ve still got it.””
Furthermore:
“Avoidable is don’t cycle up a mountain roads in the hot sun – cycle along something less ambitious and preferably in the early hours. Check your cholesterol before you attempt the Himalayas, at least.”
Do please let me know, Ms/Mr Cardiologist if you disagree with those statements.
I am struggling to understand the fact you reiterate ‘Avoidable’. You are stating a fact that if you choose to exercise which should improve your health then you are likely to die of a cardiac event if you are in your late 40’s.
That is hardly a fact. I would be interested to learn about your research on this fact. If you put this in a medical publication you would need to reference where you had researched this and reference this fact.
Martin. I would suggest you learn about Davide Rebellin. A pro cyclist who is aged 50.
Liathroidi: The article makes no conclusion; it merely reports the facts. The title states a fact; it was avoidable – he had beem making exertions practising a sport and he was in his mid 40s.
Personal comments made under an article in the “comments” section are precisely that: opinion. I did not even make an editorial comment at the bottom of the article, as I normally do, if I wish to express an opinion.
Thank you for your pro-cyclist rant.
Martin, yet another anti-cyclist rant by you and your colleagues.
There is absolutely nothing in the story, or in your comments, that corroborates that the unfortunate victim of this incident had taken up cycling in his 40’s. For all you know, he could have been a cyclist for many years, possibly decades. He is just one poor statistic, rest his soul. If you look at professional cycling, there was a recent well broadcast incident where a professional cyclist had a heart attack at the conclusion of a sprint finish. And he was young and fit. Don’t automatically assume that older folk that take up cycling are going to suffer serious / fatal effects of their love for the sport. Your “Sad but Avoidable” headline is typical of your anti-cycling stance.
Barry: horizontal wrestling is certainly good for your heart… and your morale – H
Very true. When I cycle I do try before 1000. Going out is ok . Downhill. Coming back. Well sadly the 45deg hill up from the cemetery defeats me. (no pun intended). But the rest I can do.
I would much rather some physical activity with a 40/50 year old lady friend. But sadly I think I’m a tad too old.
Patrick, it is possible to keep fit without killing yourself.
So many times I have seen cyclists in their 40s and above, cycling up the Carretera de La Cabra Montés, in the afternoon sun, in the middle of summer, red faced, sweating and just begging for a heart attack.
Blokes in their mid 40s and up should keep fit without keep looking for a tight fit in a coffin. Too many times a bloke reaches his mid 40s, thinks “shit, I’m getting old (40 is not old but tell that to a 40-year old); I’m going to start practicing sport as if I were a 20-year-old just to prove I’ve still got it.”
Avoidable is don’t cycle up a mountain roads in the hot sun – cycle along something less ambitious and preferably in the early hours. Check your cholesterol before you attempt the Himalayas, at least.
Cutting back (which does not mean ‘eliminate’) beers and tapas will not be compensated by going red-faced on a bicycle, trying to keep up with younger blokes, so you don’t look like an old fart.
cutting out the pleasures in life is boring, but not half as boring as festering inside a coffin. Being a saint from Monday to Friday and a sinner on weekends should keep your ticker ticking over.
Oh, and… amen, here endeth…
I don’t know if the statement “Sad but avoidable” really is a fair reflection.
Unless we all have cardiac scans done. None if us really know the state of our hearts. We may at a late stage get warning signs. Dizzyness shortness of breath. Maybe chest discomfort.
But that often is for people in their older age. This person was quite young. I’d hope too a better cyclist then me in my mid 60s.
So Avoidable.?? Don’t cycle. Don’t go for long walks. Dont be too romantic. Be careful of how much you eat and drink.
What a boring life. !!
