The demolition work on the old El Día supermarket began this week in order to make way for the ALDI one that will take its place.
The Almuñécar Councillor for Urban Development, Javier García, paid a visit to the work site and nodded wisely, pointed importantly and smiled graciously for the benefit of press cameras and the Human Race in general.
He pointed out that the Town Hall had granted a works licence to the building developer for the new supermarket with its own parking area.
The plot on which it sits is leased to ALDI for 25 years, which became vacant when the previous lease period expired without being renewed.
Councillor, Javier García, congratulated the building developer for having used a local building company for the demolition and excavation tasks.
The developer, ALDI Dos Hermanas Supermercados, is investing a budget of 2m euros, which will cover the construction phase, to which another million will have to be added to kit the supermarket out. If all goes according to plan, it should be ready to open later this year.
This branch of ALDI will be the second one on the Costa Tropical and the fifth one within the province of Granada.
Editorial comment: being cynical by nature, I suspect that the developer was ‘encouraged’ to use a local company after the flak that the Mayor received for using a company from Valencia to build the new municipal market in Almuñécar; one that had been found guilty of illegally financing the Mayor’s own party in that city’s elections. This had led to her being heavily criticised for using outside companies for juicy construction contracts.
This does not imply anything negative towards the standing of the Almuñécar construction company that is carrying out the demolition work.
