If you have done any shopping at Salobreña's Lidl supermarket you will have seen all sorts of rubbish, including old furniture, piling up - it has since gone.

The rubbish hoppers have been removed across from Lidl supermarket because “the attitude of locals and the rubbish-collection service was irreconcilable,” decided the Town Hall.

People had been dumping furniture and even building waste there everyday, so much so that a lorry had to make several trips to the provincial, refuse treatment plant, to remove it all.

In the meantime, the Town Hall has modified the Decreto de Delegaciones (assignment of departmental posts) because with the arrival of the new Councillor for the Environment, Ángela Rodríguez, they have had to create a separate post for Limpieza y Residuos Municipales under Luis Cano.

So, armed with this new super power (the awesomeness of which no mere mortal can hope to wield), Sr. Cano has decided to do something about the fact that there are five times the normal population bustling through the summer streets.

The normal refuse collection set up is wholly inadequate, hence the build up of old furniture across from Lidl to rival Steptoe & Son’s back yard.

Councillor Luis Cano has also called upon residents to respect the timetable and allotted collection points for household rubbish.

Furthermore, in a fluster of unbridled optimism, he also called upon people to use the litter bins correctly.

He has also increased the frequency of which yellow and blue rubbish hoppers are emptied, stepping it up to twice a week, so there is no excuse for just dumping your rubbish bags on the ground next to the hoppers, expecting them to climb in by themselves, uttering fond farewells.

So, there you have it; no more dumping a sagging armchair (complete with mother-in-law or otherwise) outside Lidl Supermarket.

Domestic refuse should be brought out between 20.00h and 23.00h, seven days a week, and the refuse-collection company will make their rounds afterwards during the night and early hours.
