A fire broke out down on Salobreña Vega Wednesday evening around 19.00h that lasted well into Thursday early morning.

The fact that there were four different starting points is indicative of foul play; Playa de Punta del Río, la Vereda de los pescadores, Balate del Molino and near the Parque de la Fuente, next to the Vial Verde.

The pall of smoke on the evening of Wednesday  was so big that it was visible from Torrenueva Costa to Velilla in Almuñécar. Yet it wasn’t until around midnight that the fire worsened with tall flames clearly visible from Monte de los Almendros.

Motril fire service, Policía Local and a municipal emergency team (with an autonomous water supply for the fire engines) all participated in tackling the fire.

The Mayor, M.ª Eugenia Rufino, spoke the next morning explaining how it had been a low-key fire to start with but the situation had deteriorated as the hours passed, owing to the wind and difficult access to the fire front.
