Salobreña holds each year a Festival de Habaneras, which falls this year from the 30th of July and the 1st of August, although last year's was cancelled.
Also known as Contradanza, it originated from English country dancing, gaining popularity in the 18th Century, especially in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Panama and Ecuador.
However it was in Cuba in the 19th Century that it became most famous, based on African rhythm pattern, becoming the first Cuban dance to become internationally popular. Outside the island people referred to it as the Havana Dance; hence Habaneras.
The VII Festival de Habaneras is a musical event that encompasses popular music from Ibero-America and each year it invites a special guest country; this year it is Nicaragua.
Organised by the Asociación Cultural Salamandroña and Grupo Cantares, the event starts off with a parade comprising of the participating musical groups, which begins in Plaza Juan Carlos I, heading down towards the beach but ending at the Casa de la Cultura.
All of the concerts will be held in the Anfiteatro Nilo Cruz, starting at 21.00h. The entrance price is a modest five euros, although you can purchase a complete-event pass for only eight euros.
You can buy your tickets at the Casa de la Cultura or the Oficina de Turismo de Salobreña, and at the door 30 minutes before it kicks off. Remember spectator numbers are limited so get yours as soon as possible.
